Iron Man Helmet Comparison: MK5 vs MK50 vs MK17

Iron Man MK5, MK50 and MK17 wearable helmets side by side
Iron Man MK5, MK50 and MK17 wearable helmets side by side

The three wearable Iron Man helmets we sell are, underneath, close to the same helmet. Same 55-62 cm fit, same 1130 g, same ABS and polycarbonate shell with metal parts and a cotton lining, same three ways to control them. What separates a €259,95 helmet from a €386,95 one is almost entirely how the face opens - and that single mechanism changes the way the helmet looks on a shelf, the way it reads in a photograph, and the way it behaves when you are wearing it in a crowd.

So this is not a ranking. It is a guide to picking a mechanism. Below is what each one actually does, what all three share, and which situations each one suits.

The short answer

  • You want the most recognizable "helmet opening" moment: the MK5. Its faceplate splits into sliding panels that fan outward instead of lifting as one piece.
  • You want the cleanest, most modern silhouette: the MK50. One solid faceplate, one finish, nothing to fuss over.
  • You want the most dramatic piece and the widest choice of finish: the MK17 Heartbreaker. The jaw drops open, and it comes in four colorways.

What you are not paying more for

This is worth saying plainly, because most comparisons in this category imply the opposite. Going from the MK5 to the MK17 does not buy you a better shell, a better lining, a longer battery life or a larger size range. All three are ABS and polycarbonate with metal parts, all three are lined with cotton, all three fit 55-62 cm, all three weigh 1130 g, and all three run around eight hours on four AA cells.

The price difference is the mechanism, the finish count, and the complexity of the paintwork. If you have a fixed budget and no strong preference between the three face designs, the MK5 is not a compromise on build. It is the same class of object with a different front.

MK5: the panels that fan open

The Mark V is the suitcase armor from Iron Man 2, and its faceplate is the reason people pick it. Rather than lifting away in one piece, the front breaks into panels that slide and fan outward. You can watch it work, which is most of the appeal, and halfway open it reads as armor rather than mask.

Gold, silver and a dark finish are offered here and nowhere else in the range, which helps if the helmet has to live in a room that already has a color scheme. The product page carries ten photos including two shots of the interior, which is the part most listings never show. If you have never bought a wearable replica before, look at those two first: the interior tells you far more about what you are getting than any exterior render.

At €259,95, the Iron Man Mark 5 helmet is where the wearable Iron Man range starts.

MK50: one faceplate, one finish, nothing to think about

The Mark L from Infinity War is the nanotech suit, and its design language is deliberately smoother than the earlier marks. Fewer seams, softer transitions, a face that lifts as a single solid plate. The quietest of the three, and that is meant as praise. On a desk it looks like a finished object rather than a machine caught mid-operation.

The voice is F.R.I.D.A.Y. rather than JARVIS, which matters if you care about matching a helmet to its film - our guide to the voice commands covers what each helmet responds to. One finish only, so there is no decision to make and no colorway to regret in six months.

Its product page has six photos, the fewest of the three. If you want to study a helmet closely before committing €323,95, that is a real limitation, and the MK5 or MK17 pages give you more to work with.

MK17 Heartbreaker: the dropping jaw

The Mark XVII from Iron Man 3 has the open-jaw design, and it is the most theatrical of the three. Instead of the face lifting or splitting, the jaw drops. This is the mechanism people photograph, which explains why the helmet carries 27 photos on its page while the others have ten and six.

Twenty-seven is worth pausing on. Enough to see the jaw at rest and open, the interior lining, the retail box, and all four finishes rather than one hero shot and a lot of guesswork. Those four are Classic Gold x Red, Silver x Red, Silver x Black and Dark Edition, and they read very differently in a room: the classic combination is the one people recognize instantly, the two silver options look more like machined hardware than costume, and the Dark Edition is the one that disappears into a dark shelf unless you light it.

At €386,95 this is the most expensive of the three, and the jaw plus four finishes is what the money buys.

Which one is the most "realistic"?

This is the question behind most of the searches that land here, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. If you are after the most realistic Iron Man helmet you can actually wear, here is how to judge one before you buy.

Three things give a replica away in photographs, and you can check all of them before you spend anything. Panel lines: whether the seams are molded gaps that catch a shadow, or painted lines that vanish at an angle. Finish depth: whether the gold or silver has any layering to it, or sits flat like a single coat of paint. The interior: whether the inside is a finished, lined cavity or a bare shell with visible mounting posts.

Interior lining of the MK5 Iron Man helmet

Judged that way, these sit in one tier - shared materials, shared construction, shared lining. What changes the impression is the mechanism and the finish. A moving jaw or a set of fanning panels reads as engineered, and that does more for realism in person than any amount of surface detail. Among the finishes, the two silver MK17 options tend to look most like metal in normal room light, because silver picks up reflections that gold flattens out.

None of them are screen-used props cast from studio molds. They are wearable 1:1 replicas built as consumer products, and the MK17 box says exactly that: "1/1 scale wearable helmet." If a listing anywhere promises you studio-grade casting at these prices, that is the claim to be skeptical of.

"Iron Man mask" or "Iron Man helmet"?

People search both, and they usually mean the same object. A few genuinely want a soft mask, which is a different product category altogether - the closest things in this catalog are the fabric Spider-Man masks, which have no electronics at all.

Every Iron Man piece here is a rigid, full helmet you put over your head, not a face covering. If you were expecting something you can fold into a bag, these are not that. If you searched for an Iron Man helmet mask, or just for an Iron Man head, this is the category you landed in: a full Iron Man helmet that covers the whole head and fits 55-62 cm.

Picking by situation

First replica helmet you have ever bought

MK5. Lowest price of the three, three finishes to choose from, and interior photos on the page so you know what you are getting before you spend.

It is going on a desk or a shelf and will rarely be worn

MK50 if you want it to sit quietly, MK17 if you want it to be the thing people ask about. Either way, add the Iron Man helmet stand at €81,95. It has an LED base, carries a Mark L nameplate, and fits all three helmets. A helmet resting directly on a shelf sits at the wrong angle and picks up dust inside the lining.

If the desk is the point, the Arc Reactor charger review covers a piece made for one.

Wearing it at a convention

Any of the three, but plan around the shared spec rather than the model. That is 1130 g on your neck all day, about eight hours from four AA cells, and a spare set in a pocket is not paranoia. Check the head size against your own measurement first: 55-62 cm is the published range, and unlike a fabric hood there is no give in a molded shell.

It is a gift and you cannot ask their head size

This is the awkward case. 55-62 cm covers most adults but not all, and there is no adjustment beyond the interior padding. If you cannot confirm the measurement, a display piece is the safer gift.

What none of them do

These are display and costume pieces. We wrote a separate piece on whether you can ride in an Iron Man helmet, and the short answer is no. None of them offer impact protection of any kind, none are certified for road use, and none should ever be worn on a motorcycle or a bike. Vision through a closed faceplate is narrow, so do not drive, cycle or navigate stairs in one. They contain electronics, so they cannot be submerged or washed.

So which one

If the budget decides it, the MK5 at €259,95 gives you the same build as the other two with the most mechanically interesting faceplate of the three, and a choice of gold, silver or dark.

If you want the cleanest object and do not want to choose a finish, the MK50 at €323,95 is the one to take, with the caveat that six photos is not much to study.

If this is the centerpiece and you want the dropping jaw and four finishes to pick from, the MK17 Heartbreaker at €386,95 is the one, and its 27 photos mean you can see almost exactly what will arrive before you order.

If you are cross-shopping outside Marvel, the same logic applies to our Transformers helmets, where the spread runs wider still.

Frequently asked

Is an Iron Man helmet mask the same thing as a helmet?

People use both words for the same object. Every Iron Man helmet here is a rigid shell that covers the whole head, with a faceplate that opens. A soft mask you can fold away is a different product category.

Which is the most realistic Iron Man helmet?

All three share the same shell, lining and finish quality, so realism comes down to the mechanism and the paint. The MK17 Heartbreaker reads as the most engineered because of the dropping jaw, and the MK5 is the most recognisable in motion because the faceplate splits into panels.

Will an Iron Man helmet fit my head?

All three Iron Man helmets are built for head circumferences of 55-62 cm (21.7-24.4 in). Measure with a soft tape before you order - our helmet size guide shows how.

Are all three Iron Man helmets the same weight?

Yes. All three weigh about 1130 g and run for around eight hours on four AA batteries, with one AAA in the remote.

Shipping and returns. Free tracked shipping on every order, usually 10-22 business days. See our shipping policy for details. 30-day return window, see our refund policy for what qualifies.
